Dominion of New England is established.
May 20, 1686
Created by the British government after suspension of the First Charter of the Massachusetts Bay Company, it consists of Massachusetts, Plymouth, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and what were then called East and West Jersey. In Massachusetts, the governor is to be chosen by the king. Voting is to be expanded to non-church members. The General Court is to be composed of lower Hose of Deputies, four from Boston, and two from each other town, and a 28-member upper Governor’s Council, chosen by the lower house, but over which the governor would have a veto. Massachusetts revolts against this new form of government in 1689.*
